Project 3 - 3dsmax design

Okay so here are some quick views done of my form. I'm quite happy with it, it's what my design intent was. From above you can see the triangular form, and from the other views it's quite an interesting shape.

Tiling to create form

As with my previous design (project 2), I will be using a version of aperiodic tiling. Which is using different sized tiles from the same set(in other words smaller and larger versions of triangles). I was told to use a more 'relatable' way of bringing this in to a workable building. So the plan will be to add different building pieces together, so that from above it will all look like triangles that have been added together to create a version of aperiodic tiling. wish me luck.

Assignment 3 redirection

After project 2, I decided I was being too literal with my deisng theories, this will follow with a redirection of my Building Concept, whilst maintaining core values expressed in project 2.

Theory - Decay

The Decay of a dome. - over time the dome pushes further to the ground.
Whilst Generative Design is used in a way that often makes it very mathematical, as used with my two theorys the golden ratio and aperiodic tiling, it is important to note that life involves decay. Which is unpredictable, however inescapable. To make my design more lifelike one must accept and adopt decay into there design. My design will use this as a protocol.

Presentation Speech

Slide1 Reality//Perception
Today, I am going to introduce you to a form of generative design that is decay, Our perception of something is often based around what we expect it to be, however in reality, life is decay, and to have a life-like generative design one must accept decay.....
Slide2
The start of this outcome, was figured out during my postcard, for which I placed a simple structure and removed various ‘gaps.’ Explaining Reality is more complex than any words would be able to describe, to get to the pits of Reality, one must ponder if they perceive the whole 'truth'.

Slide4
Rules and protocols are the base of generative design and without it there would be no way to generate a design. In this project I started my rules as having overlapping forms, and the main one being gaps. I used such protocols as the golden ratio, and the Kobon triangle theory.
Slide5
From these protocols, which were too complex to form a workable building, I decided on using a simplified vesion of the Kobon Triangle theory which is replication, replicating can only go so far until it is overused in generative design. This is where the next theory of subdivision, which is a simplified term of Aperiodic Tiling, which starts with a single tile from a given finite set, repeatedly replacing each tile by a collection of smaller tiles, drawn from the same set.
Slide6
The shape is then deformed to create its form…..
Slide7
The next step was to add decay, which in short was to alter the form in ways that the mathematical pattern would be come distorted and would no longer have a mathematical equation for the subdivision to be workable. This was done by pusing the certain parts of the form in different directions to create a rocky look.
Slide8
I then followed this by using gaps in the subdivision to create focal points and an altered form. This was achieved by breaking apart the subdivision to create larger areas, for particular areas the parts that were broken down were also distorted to create a fallen effect.
Slide9
It wasn't until I was looking through an old design journal, and I saw the words Lucid Dreaming scribbled on the page that I truly understood what this project should become, I started researching Lucid Dreaming and Perception, this led me to look at Inception(the movie). What I kept on thinking was what is reality? To answer in short, reality is decay, it is death and it is also life. What we perceive as reality isn't necessarily right, but it is close.
Slide10
The structure which is to hold masters design students, and have both learning and exhibition spaces will be an icon to the deserted Howard Smith Wharves site.
Slide11
This was the finalized outcome of the form, the view from the top shows distortion and gaps. The perspective shows that the building curves upwards which will allow traffic flow past the building.
Slide12
The building will have various viewports relating to aspects of Brisbane, however in differing from my folie which was framing only certain views of the city, the Reality vs. Perception building will encompass a near 360degree view from inside the building.
Slide13
The golden ratio will be a key aspect to how the floor plan of my building will be achieved. In which there is a flowthrough that would enable users to access each department with ease.
Slide14
Encompassing both the viewports concept and floor plan will be glass boxes scattered throughout the decayed form.
Slide15
The site is located on the North Eastern point of Brisbane point C1 curve and is based in the Howard Smith Wharves Precinct. The site has the story bridge running over the top of it and has views that range from City-Kangaroo Point and New Farm.
Slide16
This diagram enables the user to determine direct relatability to the site……
Slide17
The site is adjacent to rocky cliffs and nature has direct relations to the area.
Slide18-19
In looking at design projects, I found some interesting Generative Design techniques, most being conceptual….. This one is based around pure structure in generative design named the structural sculpture by Ravon Pilatti. Erin Black designed the Biothing, which is a complex array of triangular shapes.
